Spanish White and Chilean Sweet White

Mattiera Libalis
Montes Late Harvest Gewurtztraminer 2008

The floral and slightly off-dry Libalis paired pretty well with the Banh Uot (vietnamese rice rolls doused in spicy, sweet fish sauce, and topped with fried shallots & vietnamese ham). Made of 90% Muscat a Petits Grains, 5% Viura and 5% Malvasia.  Unfortunately, the flavourful Bun Rieu served with the stinky shrimp paste overpowered the delicate flavours of the bright straw coloured Libalis. Montes’ late harvest Gewurtztraminer was really sweet, but not cloyingly so, with sufficient acidity to keep the wine balanced for the lovely chocolate cake from Cova Pattissiere, and some plump juicy cherries.
