Chateau La Nerthe 2007, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, France

Chateau La Nerthe 2007Deep inky purple core with a dark cherry rim. Luscious, opulent dark cherries & berries hit the nose immediately on first pour. Pronounced vanilla pods, caramelised sugar and liquorice notes ensued with a faint scent of fresh rosemary. Dark, brooding, and muscular on the palate with plenty of cassis, ripe blackberries, dark chocolate and black pepper. However, that didn’t manage to mask the stack of smooth ripe tannins lying underneath this wine. Thank God its acidity was sufficiently high (and bright) that I didn’t find myself calling this jammy or a fruit bomb. Definitely too young to drink but the fond memories I had of the place compelled me to pick up this bottle. Should keep well in the cellar for the next 15-20 years. I was told that the grapes meant for Cuvee Les Cadettes had gone into this for the vintage…hmm…
