Another workman’s lunch, also in a smaller portion for me. Again, its simplicity is apparent – just a thick slice of deep fried eggplant, topped with some ham and layered with a coating of local cheese (melted) which flavour is quite similar to Dutch Edam.
orange flavoured cake, coconut and sweet port infused egg custard (with an oozy centre), followed by a
filo shortcrust pastry lined with sweet, slightly chewy egg custard and soft sugary coconut paste (the caramelised portion topped with coconut flakes). Just way too much eggs, coconut and sugar in Portuguese dessert. Thank God their coffee (espresso) is bitter and acidic!
This is a small portion of traditional (workman’s lunch of) stewed pork with rice, potatoes and some spinach. I know it doesn’t seem like much but I actually felt full after the meal and the large coffee. Portuguese tend to oversalt their food and this Rojões de Porco Patinhos was no exception. But it doesn’t matter. It was yummy and I polished everything off the plate, down to the last grain of rice.
